Session One – Beginning Ranch Roping One -“Ground” Clinic
Clinician - Bob Sagely
Time: 9 am until 12 noon (Please arrive early. We will start promptly at 9:00 am.)
This clinic is an introduction to authentic, working style roping for humane cattle handling and doctoring. You can learn how to head or heel catch a cow from any angle or position around the animal without having to chase it around the pasture at mach 3 speed. Ranch roping is a slow and quiet manner of roping that keeps the cow, horse and roper calm and safe.
This session will involve ranch roping basics and be all ground work. You won’t need a horse for this one so it is for beginners and experienced arena ropers alike. Learn about the history of ranch roping and the difference between this working style of roping and competitive arena roping. Bob will share a wealth of information about the various types of ropes and hondas; proper coiling techniques; forehand and backhand swings, including the houlihan delivery; several head and heel catches from various points around the cow and a brief demo of the ranch horse at work. Participants will come away with well over a dozen different catches to practice from the ground.
Session Two – Beginning Ranch Roping Clinic Two - The Making of a Ranch Horse
Prerequisite – Beginning Ranch Roping One - “Ground” Clinic or permission of Bob Sagely
Time – 1 pm til 4 pm (Please arrive early. We will start promptly at 1:00p pm.)
This clinic expands on the skills taught in the “Ground” Clinic. It will involve learning how to teach a horse to become a ranch roping horse. You will learn about getting your horse used to the swinging rope; dummy roping practice from horseback; logging (dragging) a load; safe dallying; the dally game for safe practice. If time allows and skill levels are appropriate participants can do some roping of drag dummies
