Horseman's Knives

Visit our new storefront to buy a handy horseman's knife.

A fixed-blade, quick-draw, sheath knife is a tool that no horseman or horsewoman should be without. These are friction held in the sheath but instantly available without fumbling with a tie, snap or strap. Sage Saddlery makes several styles of sheaths for the knives we sell. We will also make you a custom sheath for your own special knife.

Pancake style sheaths provide a very close, snag-free fit with the handle angled slightly upward for a nice, smooth and quick draw. These are reversible, though if there is decorative stamping certain positions will turn that in and not allow it to be seen unless stamped on both sides (a more expensive, custom order). Made in a left or right hand cross draw style they can be worn on the other side as well as worn sob (small of the back) by flipping them over when putting them on your belt. Be sure you know what you want when ordering this style sheath. Contact me for availability as I usually have a couple on hand.

Parallel style sheaths with a fixed loop can be worn on one side or the other, as well as sob (small of the back) but will have the handle upside down when reversed. The reversible belt loop style allows the knife to be worn with handle forward or backward, on either side and behind you (sob style) by simply unscrewing the concha and reversing the belt loop. Knife sits parallel to belt on this style to keep sheath from marking up your saddle or fouling your catch rope easily. Made to order so allow three weeks for delivery.

The smaller knives are from Frost Cutlery's Coon Hunter series and I generally have a couple in stock. They are made with a full tang 440 stainless steel blade (Rockwell 56-58) in the drop-point style. Comes sharpened and ready to bail you out of a tight spot or just to whittle with during the noon break. Bone handles have been colored and are brass pinned with brass bolster finger grip and brass butt plate. Overall length is 5 3/4" with an approximate 2 1/2" blade. Very nice, compact knives, very sharp in high polish, never rust stainless steel. These are not a domestic made knife but are carrying a made in china mark. I have used the same one for over two years now and am very happy with its ability to take and hold an edge. Handle color may be limited for in stock orders but can be ordered in the following colors for a slightly higher price due to shipping and handling for the special orders (add $7.50 for color preference not in stock): Autumn Second Cut (brown), Red Walnut, Jade Green (darker), Moss Green (lighter), Banana (yellow), Burnt Peach (kinda orangish), Cancun Blue. Also available in Deer Stag (Special Order Price add $20.00 to prices listed below for sheath style).

The larger knives (first two pictures) are a new blade I will stock for awhile from Frost Cutlery brand. They have stainless steel blades, again a "made in China" deal, with a matte, non-glare finish. It also is not a domestic deal but these full tang knives with full pinned paka wood handles take a nice, sharp edge and are nicely made. Th recurved cutting edge is real nice for slicing through a rope with little effort. They have an overall length of about 9" and a blade of about 4 1/2". These are solid utility quality knives that will stand hard use and be inexpensive enough that you won't mind using it hard.

Colors for leather can be requested as can knife handle colors. Not all colors for handles shown are available at all times but russet, chestnut and brown leather is pretty near always available. Dyed leather is also possible so black, oxblood and other colors can be had. Choose from a variety of sheath styles or design your own custom sheath and I will build it for you (I do need the knife to build a custom fitted sheath). Prices below reflect sheath and knives pictured, custom sheath design prices will vary. Send me your design and I will quote you a price. Also custom sheaths can be built for your special knife.
